In collaboration with Deco Art in Squillace, Nido di Seta created Nico’ Bijoux, an artiginal union that elegantly blends the rich history of San Floro silk and Squillace ceramics into unique, handmade jewelry that represents the history, culture, colors and warmth of our Calabria.
Each piece is unique and is crafted 100% by hand. We start by breeding the silkworms, reeling the thread and dying it using all-natural, organic products. Ceramic beads are created, painted and meticulously decorated by hand using an ancient craft technique called “Graffiti,” which has the DOC classification by the European Commission.
In order to more fully develop our knowledge of silk, we traveled to Asia and retraced the ancient Silk Road. The experience was inspirational and we were motivated to create jewelry combing our silk with ceramics made by Raku, a Japanese technique dating from the 1600s that was used in ancient tea cermonies. The resulting process creates unique decorative effects marked by thermal cracks and metallic reflections.
From this, Siráku, a name inspired by the term Sirìcu, meaning ‘silkworm’ in Calabrese dialect and ‘Raku,’ the Japanese ceramic technique, was born. This jewerly line honors silk’s Eastern roots by weaving the threads with the simplicity and naturalness of their ancient Eastern philsophy.
